The Global Experience Requirement is a hallmark of the Global Communities program. It is a 3-credit course that enables students to deepen their knowledge of a global issue and/or a different culture through an immersive experience. Global Communities staff work closely with students to support their pursuit of a global experience that meets their individual academic, professional, and personal goals.

The Global Experience consist of four options:

  • Global Service: GC students may fulfill their Global Experience requirement by gaining acceptance into select GC-designated Global Service programs AND enrolling in a 3-credit course in the Spring or Summer semester course called BSGC398A: Global Service (General Education: Diversity- Cultural Competency). This online course requires directed readings and reflective writings related to your Global Service / Alternative Break experience.
  • For-Credit Internship: In this option, students find and apply for a for-credit internship with an organization that has a global or international mission. This might be an agency in the federal government dealing with foreign policy, a non-profit that addresses a global issue or a business that has a global philanthropy unit.
  • Education Abroad: Give your resume a competitive edge by taking on an intensive study abroad experience during your winter, summer or spring break and earning at least 3 academic credits. Maryland Short-term programs are led by a UMD faculty who work with UMD's Education Abroad Office to develop a rigorous and engaging academic program.
  • Experiential Courses: University departments periodically offer experiential courses that are globally-oriented and take learning out of the classroom and into our local community. Global Communities can approve these for global experience credit on a case-by-case basis.
