Students Lend a Hand in our Local Community
Branching out beyond the UMD campus and taking advantage of the opportunities, community, and culture that the broader DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area have to offer is one of the features that makes Global Communities unique. Global Communities students enagement outside of our campus home was recently highlighted in the Office of Community Engagement's biannual report, Fearless Connectons!
For the 2017-2018 academic year, GC is proud to share that:
- 35 students participated in Alternative Breaks, a program that engages students in short-term service-learning experiences that challenge social, political, and economic structures of the global community. Some of these experiences included service opportunities in Ecuador, Guatemala, Barbados Philadelphia, Virginia, and the DC area.
- More than 40 students took advantage of study abroad opportunities; including our own course "Global Serice in the Dominican Republic and Reflection on U.S. Identity"
- Over 150 students have participated in service at the Annual Hispanic Festival since 2016!
